What to do When Your Dog Gets Ill

Everybody with pets, whether dogs or puppies, desires to have a vet surgeon to turn to in an emergency. They do a fabulous job, and you shouldn’t ignore a pet’s suffering. But it’s a waste of cash to visit the Vet’s surgery when the issue is one you can disentangle at home.

This is a brief overview to coping with minor infirmities as a kind of Pets’ first aid. If the symptoms endure you can still contact the vet. Some dog breeds don’t like being handled : pitbull dogs and bull terriers for instance. This should be key part of dog obedience coaching so the dog accepts you’re entitled to treat him for his very own good. My dog, a Collie German Shepherd cross, gets twigs and sticks caught in round his rear and his fuzzy tail. Left undealt with, these may cause the fur to mat around them. You can avoid this with one or two minutes’ attention.

Ticks are nasty. They’ve an one-piece body and the harpoon-like mouth barbs stick to a host ( your dog ) for feeding. The home cure is easy and inexpensive petrol jelly, which is what you would get if you went to a pet shop and paid for a proprietary tick remover! The most efficient way to take away the tick is to put a massive pile of petrol jelly over the area where it has attached itself.

Leave this for a minimum of 10 mins. Once the tick’s grip loosens, you can wipe it out of the way with a tissue. Ear mites – if your pet has ear mites, then place 2 drops of corn oil into its ears ( an eye dropper will do the job ), massage the ear softly then clean with a cotton ball. This could suffocate the mites.

Regular ear washing with oil is endorsed by vets, to avoid a buildup of wax and irritations. Hard stools – try this easy solution for a constipated pet. For a massive dog, add three to four spoons of mineral oil to its food. For a tiny dog cut back the dose to one to two small spoons.

Do this for a couple of days and the difficulty should clear up. The squite mix one heaped small spoon of carob powder with a little water and whisk into your dog’s dinner. Urinary tract infections mix 30-40ml of cranberry juice into your pet’s food.

This can augment the astringency of its pee, reduce bacteria and help relieve the pain. And if you aren’t sure what is wrong say your pet appears ‘off colour’ then here is a tip we use all of the time.

Add half a melted aspirin or children’s liquid drug to your pet’s food.
