Millie is our Standard Schnauzer puppy. She was a really cute puppy! Well she still is cute, but she is now nearly 6 months old and puppies grow into dogs quickly, so she is now more of a juvenile than a pup.

We have enjoyed photographing her, and we think she is quite photogenic, so we hope you enjoy this, the resulting video on this blog posting.

The Standard Schnauzer is generally described as a robust, heavy-set dog. The breed is medium sized and sturdily built with good muscle and plenty of bone; in fact quite solidly-built in proportion of body length to height.

Millie is already quite heavy to lift, despite not being as tall as our last dog yet (a Pointer, Dalmation cross), her rugged build and dense harsh coat are softened by the characteristically arched eyebrows and the longish moustache and whiskers.

From the breed rules the standard should be in height at the highest point of the shoulder blades – 18½ to 19½ inches for males and 17½ inches to 18½ inches for females. We hear that dogs measuring over or under these limits must be scored lower in dog show terms.

A medium size dog, she should in other words be knee high, and weigh within the range of 35 to 45 pounds. The Standard Schnauzer combines a spirited temperament with extreme dependability. She has so far been excellent with visitors and friends, and we think she will also be a real guardian of our home and family – although possibly inclined to bark a little too much!.

Look into the face of a Schnauzer and it’s not hard to see him or her as a real scholarly dog; some say a Dumbledore of dogs. The arched, fringing brows; her profuse beard, make it easy to imagine a Schnauzer passing on wise sayings to the likes of Harry Potter!

When you consider the impressive variety of roles the Schnauzer breed has fulfilled over the years, we wonder whether she will have talents beyond those of the average canine. She really looks at things with apparent deep concentration, looks at TV when animals appear, and appears to be thinking about what she is looking at.

Bred in Germany over 500 years ago to start with as a guardian to accompany tradesmen and farmers taking goods to market, the many talented Schnauzer has also served as ratcatcher, military messenger, cattle drover, and companion. More recently they have shown themselves good at assisting the the physically challenged and the hearing impaired, and acting as police, security, and search and rescue dogs.

The Standard Schnauzer is an exciting animal to see, to watch, and to own but they are not for everyone to own. We are finding that she is living up to their reputation as a strong breed with stubborn streaks. She clealry really needs exercise as her body is clearly developing to become very athletic. It is clear to us that she will need to be exercised more than most dogs. No doubt it would be good for her to be involved with agility, obedience, herding, tracking and more, but for us I guess we will just enjoy keepng fit with her while walking the abundance of country walks near where we live.

The Standard is different like night and day when compared to the Miniature Schnauzer or even the Giant Schnauzer, and we will be sure to need good training advice. We have been impressed by the training logic in one ebook, its called 5 Dog Training Myths and you can download it for free.
